The Azores Plateau is a vast submarine elevation in the North Atlantic Ocean, where the archipelago of the Azores is located. As these islands belong to Portugal, the country exercises maritime rights over the surrounding areas.
A large part of the Azores Plateau lies within Portugal’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, meaning that Portugal has rights to explore and manage the resources of these seabed areas.
Portugal has different levels of maritime rights in this region:
Territorial Sea (up to 12 nautical miles)
Full sovereignty
Portugal exercises complete authority, as if it were land territory (with some exceptions, such as the right of innocent passage for foreign vessels).
Contiguous Zone (up to 24 nautical miles)
Enforcement powers
Portugal may act to prevent or punish infringements (customs, immigration, health regulations, etc.).
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) (up to 200 nautical miles)
Resource rights
Portugal has rights over natural resources (fisheries, energy, minerals), but not full sovereignty—other states retain freedom of navigation.
Continental Shelf (which may extend beyond 200 nautical miles)
Rights over the seabed
Portugal may explore and exploit the subsoil resources (such as oil or minerals), even if the waters above are international.
Important note
Not all of the Azores Plateau necessarily falls within these areas—some parts may lie in international waters or in zones still subject to international delimitation.
How the Azores Plateau fits into these maritime zones:
The plateau extends around the Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic and spans several maritime zones under Portuguese jurisdiction:
1. Area close to the islands (Territorial Sea)
A small portion of the plateau lies very close to the islands
Here, Portugal has full sovereignty
2. Mostly within the EEZ (up to 200 nautical miles)
The largest part of the plateau lies within the EEZ
Portugal has:
Fishing rights
Energy exploitation (e.g., offshore wind)
Mineral resources
3. Parts within the extended continental shelf
The plateau is geologically significant because:
It supports Portugal’s claim to extend its continental shelf
In these areas:
Portugal has rights over the seabed and subsoil
Even beyond 200 nautical miles
4. Possible areas outside jurisdiction
Some outer parts of the plateau may:
Lie in international waters
Or be in areas still pending international recognition or delimitation

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Neogene : 8.12 ± 0.85 Ma to 4.00 ± 0.31 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
