This is a representative section of the Basal Group near the Mitsero village, which consist of over 50% dykes with screens of pillow lavas in-betweeen.

The outcrop at the roadcut nearby Mitsero village, exposes partially altered dykes with a small screens of pillow lavas, which belongs to the transitional unit between the Sheeted Dyke Complex and the overlying extrusive series, known as Basal Group. The Basal outcrops for a few kilometers along the main Orounta-Platanistassa road forming a relatively subdued topography.

The unit is marked by the large number of dykes intruding lavas at the lower part of the volcanic sequence near the boundaryv with the Sheteed Dyke Complex, which is exposed a few kilometers south of the Mitsero village. The contact between the two is orbitrarily positioned, where pillow lavas are not observed in-between dykes. The upper boundary of the Basal Group with the Lower Pillow Lavas is also gradational and arbirarily positioned, where the abundance of dykes increases by approximately 50% and the degree of hydrothermal alterationb apparently is higher.

The Basal group is usually consist of over 80-90% dykes with screens of pillow lavas. They are highly altered due to the effect of hydrothermal alteration at low temperatures (300-500 degrees Celsius) and moderate pressure (sub-greenschist to greenschist facies of metamorphism) in contrast to the Lower and Upper Pillow Lavas. which have been affected by hydrothermal alteration at low temperatures (less than 150 degrees Celsius) and pressure (zeolite facies of metamorphism).

Both dykes and pillow lavas indicate various stages of alteration especially at the lower half of the unit, where secondary minerals are observed such as quartz, chlorite, epidote and pyrite.
