Staring Groeve; Staringgroeve

A former quarry.

In the 19th century, while researching the geology of Twente, Winand Staring also drilled some test drillings in the sandstone of Losser. The then mayor of Losser saw possibilities to use it as a fertilizer. The first test drilling failed, but the second drilling found sandstone at a depth of 10 meters. Because the extraction of the sandstone was found to be unprofitable, this test drilling remained.
In 1965, when the municipality of Losser planned a residential area in the vicinity of the present Staring quarry, the sandstone was exposed again on the initiative of amateur geologist W.F. Anderson. With a number of other amateur geologists, it was found at a depth of 4 meters. The municipality created a public garden around the quarry and erected a bust of Staring.
The quarry can be visited on request through the Losser Geology Museum.
The quarry is very rich in fossils; in the quarry were found remains of various species of bivalves, sea urchins, sharks, sea lilies, lobsters and ammonites. Fossil conifer wood containing borer mussels was also found.

The sandstone is of Early Cretaceous (early Late Hauterivian) age.
The fossils are from the Hauterivian.
