A large Archaean dunite complex of komatiitic affinity within the Minigwal Greenstone Belt, first identified by BHP in the 1980s. The dunite is present below sand cover, and all sampling has been by exploration drilling.

Exploration by Western Mines Group since 2021 has involved multiple phases of both diamond and reverse circulation (RC) drilling, with cumulatively over 13,000m diamond and 12,500m RC drilled to May 2024. Mineralisation is present over a wide lateral and depth volume, and is dominated by disseminated Ni-Fe sulphides hosted in variably-serpentinised dunite. Multiple lines of evidence also suggest Mulga Tank is not just an extensive Type 2 Mt Keith-style disseminated nickel sulphide system but is more likely to be a hybrid Type 1-2 Perseverance-style system with a high-grade basal massive sulphide component. Evidence for this includes the occurrence of high tenor and high grade remobilised sulphide veinlets and large immiscible globules seen in diamond core and matrix to semi-massive sulphide observed in RC chips. A number of intersections with greater than 1% Ni are present in the existing drilling.
