Recent exploration by Anglo American has established two chromitites in Lower zone rocks that are consistently associated with PGEs ± Ni, Cu, Au, Co, in the area of the Zwartfontein farm (818LR), located in the central portion of the northern limb. The Lower zone can be observed at surface where the Zwartfontein intrusion crops out on the farms of Zwartfontein and Vaalkop. The intrusion is roughly triangular shaped, 3 km wide, and bordered to the northwest by the Mohlosane fault. The intrusion comprises ultramafic orthopyroxene-olivine and orthopyroxene-dominant cumulates, with Archean granite-gneiss and Malmani dolomite footwall and roof rocks.
