The hydrothermal alteration zone in the Zafarghand copper porphyry system, with an area of about 7 km2 (1.5 × 4.5 km), is partially covered by alluvial deposits. The two porphyry centers of this system are characterized by intense phyllic hydrothermal alteration, quartz-magnetite stockwork, and extensive mineralization of iron oxides (hematite, goethite, and jarosite) and locally, malachite/chalcopyrite. These centers are surrounded by rhyodacite and andesite porphyry units with strong argillic and propylitic alterations.
