Hematite and hematitic (red) and limonitic (yellow) ochres formed by subaerial alteration of Triassic effusive materials and redeposition in karst cavities (paleokarst) of carbonate platforms were mined in the Latemar Group in the 1920s. The most significant mines, consisting of galleries only a few meters long, are the Cava del Bòl in Valaverta on the southeastern slope of i Cornacci (also Monte Cornon) just above Ziano di Fiemme at 1540 m above sea level (municipality of Ziano di Fiemme), the Rotlahn Mines (“Galleria Mussolini”) on the northern slope of Mount Latemar at 2400 m above sea level (municipality of Nova Levante), and the Cava del Bòl in Valsorda on the southeastern slope of Col Cornon approximately at 2300 m above sea level (municipality of Moena).
All of the aforementioned mining sites are difficult to reach as they are off official, regularly marked and maintained trails.
