Daugherty Gulch lies within the Bayhorse Anticline, a NW-SE trending fold in the Bayhorse mining district (Ross 1937; Brennan et al. 2020). Bedrock includes slate, carbonate, and intrusive rocks, cut by Cretaceous granitic phases of the Idaho Batholith and partly overlain by Eocene Challis Volcanics (Hobbs et al. 1991; Krohe et al. 2020). Quaternary alluvium and colluvium are sourced from surrounding units: the Ramshorn Slate provides fine-grained, Fe-stained debris; the Bayhorse Dolomite contributes resistant carbonate blocks and scree; Challis Volcanic flows and dikes add angular volcanic fragments and ash-rich material; and weathered Idaho Batholith granodiorite/quartz monzonite yields coarse sandy-gravelly colluvium. These components produce heterogeneous gulch fill that reflects the complex lithologic assemblage exposed in the drainage.
