The gold hosting Gadag greenstone belt (GGB) a part of Western Dharwar Craton (WDC) extends for 2400 km2 to the south of Gadag town. The DC is considered to have formed by the accretion of Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC) and WDC during ∼2.7 to 2.51 Ga, which is demarcated by the Chitradurga shear zone. Based on the lithological similarities and structural coherence, GGB is believed to be a northern continuation of the Chitradurga shear zone.
Since ancient time, GGF is well known for the extensive mining activity and it dates back to about four thousand years. Mining activity was intermittently continued till 500–600 CE when all mining activities were ceased. In 1902, mining activities were resumed and lasted for less than a decade. Currently, Gadag has no operational mines but the detailed investigation and exploration by Geological Survey of India (GSI) and many private/public sector companies have proven the economic feasibility and mining potentiality of the GGF.
The gold mineralization in the GGF is distributed in three different auriferous lodes with distinct litho-assemblages (i.e., metabasalt, metaargillite and BIF) along the shear zones, unlike other orogenic gold deposits in India. These lode systems run sub-parallel to the main regional foliation (NW-SE) in a linear manner. Three auriferous lode systems are named as western, central and eastern, based on their position from west to east.
