Cava dei Fossili; Fossil Quarry
Cava Vecchia (literally 'Old Quarry'), also known as Cava dei Fossili ('Fossil Quarry'), is an abandoned quarry of the 'Pietra di Verezzi'.
The quarry was originally worked by underground excavation and was already operative by the 16th Century (the exact beginning of extraction, however, is not confirmed). Stones from this locality were destined for prestigious aristocratic buildings in Genoa and within the Doria family fief in Loano.
In the late 1930s, a major collapse occurred which led to the cessation of extraction. Fortunately, there were no casualties, as the workers were outside on their lunch break at the time of the collapse.
The Verezzi Member is dated to the SerravallianâLanghian [11.63 - 15.98 million years ago] and consists of calcarenites and biocalcarenites varying in colour from pinkish to deep red. The red hue results from the enrichment in microgranular hematite, produced by the alteration of clastic of Melogno porphyroids. The 'Pietra di Verezzi' ranges from weakly to strongly cemented. Fossil content includes fragments of echinoids (mainly radioles), bichordites (which are fodinichnia left by echinoids), bivalves such as Aequipecten bollenensis (Mayer-Eymar, 1876), Aequipecten macrotis (G. B. Sowerby I, 1847), Aequipecten malvinae (Du Bois de MontpÃĐreux, 1831), and Talochlamys multistriata (Poli, 1795), as well as brachiopods like Gryphus rovasendianus (Seguenza, 1866), rare solitary corals, and selachian teeth.
