Ion-adsorption REE deposit.
The ALS Group, which forms the core of the suture zone, consists of lower Proterozoic metamorphic rocks, including gneiss, granulite, migmatite, marble, and gneissic granite. Petrological studies indicate that these rocks experienced at least three distinct metamorphic events during the Proterozoic, Indosinian, and Yanshanian orogenies. The ore-forming parent rocks of the Honghe REE deposit mainly include Indochinese and Yanshanian granites, Proterozoic plagioclase gneiss, and leptynite.
The weathering profile is developed on K-feldspar gneiss, with a total thickness of 22 m. Based on the degree of weathering, mineral composition, and structure, the profile was divided into the following horizons: (1) The A horizon (clay horizon), which is generally yellowish-red and primarily composed of clay minerals, with minor fine-grained quartz. The surface layer is grayish-black, rich in organic matter, and characterized by well-developed plant roots; (2) The B horizon (completely weathered layer), which is brownish-yellow in color and has a loose structure. It is predominantly composed of clay minerals, with subordinate fine-grained quartz, feldspar, and mica, along with a minor amount of semi-weathered rock; (3) The C horizon (semi-weathered layer), which is deep brownish-yellow, largely preserves the parent rock structure, and exhibits low clay content; and (4) The P horizon, consisting of grayish-white K-feldspar gneiss with a well-developed gneissic texture.
