Mina do Bugalho, São Brás dos Matos, Alandroal, Distrito de Évora, Portugal

Abandoned Copper Mine — Mining Concession No. 30, Herdade do Bugalho (Cu).
Old parish of São Brás dos Matos, also known as Mina do Bugalho.
Registered on 23 August 1866 (closed around 1900).

Mina do Bugalho is a historic, abandoned mining site and small settlement in southern Portugal. The mine was historically exploited mainly for copper and also yielded pyrite, sulphur, silver, and minor amounts of gold.

Geologically, the mine is located within the Ossa–Morena Zone, a major geological domain of southern Portugal characterized by Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits. Mineralization occurs within a quartz–carbonate vein or fault system hosted by Silurian rocks, near the Messejana Fault (Falha da Messejana).

Mining activity took place primarily in the late 19th century, with the mining concession (Herdade do Bugalho) registered in 1866 and operations ceasing around 1900. The settlement of Mina do Bugalho developed around these mining activities, as miners constructed housing and infrastructure, giving rise to the village’s name.

The surrounding area also contains important megalithic monuments, attesting to a long history of human occupation in the region. There are two megalithic dolmens in the nearby Herdade dos Galvões, Mina do Bugalho: Anta dos Galvões (38.636819° N, 7.468679° W) and Anta do Pão Mole (38.698864° N, 7.312013° W).

Rochas encaixantes: liditos, xistos.
Geologia local: Silúrico, perto da grande falha de Messajana.
