The Nidderdale National Landscape is a dramatic and varied upland landscape in North Yorkshire, extending west from the edge of the Vale of York into the eastern Pennines. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1994 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, it is valued for its sense of space and remoteness, strong rural traditions, and striking contrasts between open moorland, deep valleys, reservoirs, and pastoral farmland. The River Nidd and its tributaries cut through the heart of the area, creating a landscape shaped by both natural processes and long-established human use.
Geologically, Nidderdale lies on the eastern flank of the Pennines and is underlain mainly by Carboniferous rocks, including limestones, sandstones, gritstones, and shales laid down around 320–340 million years ago. These strata form the stepped valley sides, high moorland plateaux, and limestone scars that characterise the landscape, while glacial deposits from the last Ice Age have further modified valley floors and slopes. The area has a notable mining heritage, particularly for lead and associated minerals, with mining activity dating back to Roman times and peaking in the 18th and 19th centuries. Remains of mines, hushes, smelt mills, and spoil heaps are still visible across the dale, forming an important part of its historic character.
