The Serra da Mesa Granitic Massif (SMGM) is located within the Goiás Tin Province (PEG), which comprises four subprovinces where tin-bearing granitic massifs associated with REEs have been described. The SMGM is considered the most representative granite-type of the SPT, with a major axis of 22 km and an area of approximately 230 km2, located 15 km south of the city of Minaçu, Goiás.
The main lithological phase is a gray to pinkish, medium- to coarse-grained biotite monzogranite, with mineral composition dominated by quartz (25%), microcline (22%), oligoclase-albite (An14–7; 18%), and biotite (12%). Accessory minerals include zircon, allanite, titanite, apatite, monazite and fergusonite. A preferred orientation of minerals is observed in the rock, defined mainly by biotite and sometimes chlorite, which is the main secondary mineral, formed along the cleavage lamellae of biotite. No significant mineralization is known in Serra da Mesa, but the granitic massif is crosscut by neoproterozoic pegmatitic dykes.
A small portion in the south of Serra da Mesa is at Colinas do Sul municipality.
