Note:
"Slayley Quarry" appears to be both a misnomer and the result of some confusion, since there is another quarry, Slaley Quarry (Parish Quarry), at nearby Slaley hamlet.

Bonsall is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales on the edge of the Peak District. The Peak District itself is an upland area in England at the southern end of the Pennines. It is mostly in northern Derbyshire, but also includes parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire. An area of great diversity, it is usually split into the Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found and the geology is gritstone, and the White Peak which is a limestone area, known for its valleys and gorges which cut through the limestone plateau. The Dark Peak forms an arc along the north, east and west sides while the White Peak makes up the central and southern extent of the area. The village of Bonsall is about 2 miles (3.2 km) from Matlock and about 14.5 miles (23 km) from Derby. It has a long history of lead mining, along with the neighbouring market town of Wirksworth, probably going back to Roman times, and is recorded in the Domesday Book. The surrounding area, especially on Bonsall Moor, is rich in old mine workings and quarries, reflecting the importance of lead to the area. The moor has been extensively mined, both by shafts and open workings, at one time for lead and latterly for fluorspar. At Moor Farm Quarry, which was worked in the 1980’s, large scalenohedral calcite groups were found and occasionally ‘axe-head’ calcite twins. Cerussite crystals on galena were also quite common there and clear fluorite predominated.
