The weathering crust profile at Xiajialing is divided from top to bottom into the topsoil, laterite, and spheroidal weathering layer. The topsoil is brown and contains extensively developed plant root systems; it is mainly composed of kaolinite and quartz. The underlying laterite is reddish-brown, in which relict textures and structures of the bedrock are rarely preserved; its mineral assemblage consists of quartz, kaolinite, and minor residual K-feldspar and plagioclase. The spheroidal weathering zone is light yellow and constitutes the principal ore-bearing horizon; it largely retains the original mineral composition of the bedrock, with only minor kaolinization of plagioclase and chloritization of some biotite.
