The Groß Schönebeck geothermal research site is a deep geothermal research platform situated north-east of Berlin, on the southern margin of the North German Basin, Germany. The site comprises two research wells forming a geothermal doublet, accessing water-bearing Permian reservoir horizons at depths of approximately 3.9–4.4 km and temperatures around 150 °C.
Mineralogically, the site is notable for the occurrence of laurionite in geothermal well scale and wellbore fill associated with highly saline, metal-bearing formation brines. Laurionite has been reported from downhole material in the production well, including material recovered from around 4112 m depth.
