Girola Hill
Disused kyanite-sillimanite mine in the Girola Hill area.
"The rocks exposed at Girola Hill are some of the oldest in the Sakoli Fold Belt (SFB) and are attributed to the Pre-Sakoli Group, a metamorphosed and deformed Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) sequence (intrusive protoliths) occurring at the core of, and also surrounding, the younger Proterozoic Sakoli Supracrustal sequence. Archean TTG basement (also known as the Amgaon Gneiss Supracrustals, or AGS) includes enclaves of the metapelites containing the vein mineralization studied in this work. Metapelite mineral assemblages comprise kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite, cordierite, and garnet, indicating that these rocks have undergone a complex metamorphic history over deep geological time." (Dandekar et al., 2025).
Dandekar et al. (2025) give the mine's coordinates as 79.93° N, 21.05° E, but the accurate coordinates appear to be 21.04100° N, 79.94936° E and have been adjusted accordingly.
