Ilhéu de Santa Maria
A small islet on the southern coast of Santiago Island that is connected by road to Santiago Island.
"Here, on Quail Island (now Ilhéu de Santa Maria) he [Charles Darwin] noted the presence of a horizontal white band running through the rocks, about 30
feet (~10 metres) above sea-level ... It was composed of a sandy breccia, made of compressed shells and ‘corals’ (actually maerl) and continued as far
as the eye could see".
