Oxidised material from the main lode of the Mount Evelyn deposit was mined via open-cut workings from 1886 to 1889 to a depth of ∼10m, producing 610 t Pb and 2.8 t Ag. Intermittent mining occurred from 1894 to 1948, producing a combined 4149 t of ore at an unspecified grade. The mine was reopened in 1966 by United Uranium NL when it produced 81 554 t of ore grading 5.5wt% Pb, 7.5wt% Zn and 276g/t Ag from open cut and underground mining until the mine was closed in August 1970. During this period of mining, cadmium and gold were extracted as by-products with 54 t and 56.6kg extracted, respectively. At the time of mine closure, it was estimated that 7420 t of ore remained with a grade of 6.7wt% Pb, 3.7wt% Zn and 343g/t Ag. Seven separate lodes are identified at surface within the immediate vicinity of the deposit and from west to east are termed: No. 1 Lode, No. 2 Lode, No. 3 Lode, South Adit Lode, Adit Lode, Main Lode, East Lode and Murrays Lode. North of the main lodes, two smaller and separate lodes are present and termed the Northwest Evelyn and Northeast Evelyn lodes. The various lodes pinch and swell at depth with only the No. 2, No. 3, Main Lode, East Lode and Murrays Lode identified at the 900’ level. The largest lode, termed the ‘Main Lode’, sits within the centre of the deposit with a surface exposure extending ∼75m long and a thickness ranging from 1 to 3m.
