Köppen climate type:
Coal seams of the Elbistan field are hosted by the Ahmetçik Formation and are dated to the Upper Miocene–Pliocene (Neogene). The principal seam has an average thickness of approximately 80 m and reaches up to 105 m in the Kışlaköy area. With proven reserves exceeding 4.5 billion tons, the Afşin–Elbistan Basin constitutes the largest lignite resource in Türkiye. These coals are described as lignite to soft brown coal and are marked by high moisture, ash, and sulfur contents together with relatively low calorific values.
