This sabkha extends north-south and covers about 18 km2 area near Al-Awshaziyah village. It is located on the foot of the Khortam member cuesta of Khuff Formation. The Khortam member is comprised of sandstone in the lower part followed by massive oolitic limestone in the upper part, the other member, Midhnab, of the same formation is comprised of green clayey siltstone and gypsiferous dolomitic claystone. Sabkha’s distinctive features in the area are composed of heterogeneous sediments. They are mainly evaporite, sand and silt with a clay fraction as matrix material. This is an ephemeral saline basin area where the evaporation rate is greater than the annual rainfall and is similar to a playa lake.
