The study area is located in the upper reaches of the Wang River, Wang Nua District, Lampang Province, northern Thailand. The drainage basin contains granitoid intrusions, metasedimentary and metamorphic rocks, volcanic rocks, and unconsolidated Quaternary alluvial deposits. Under tropical climatic conditions, weathering and erosion release detrital rutile, zircon, magnetite, and other resistant minerals from these different lithologies, whereas native gold is most plausibly liberated from hydrothermal quartz-vein and/or sulfide mineralization hosted by or associated with the bedrock units. The alluvial assemblage therefore combines minerals that differ in both their primary sources and formation conditions.
