The bauxite in the Longdong area (an oil and gas reservoir) is part of the bauxite series developed on the Paleozoic weathering crust in the North China Plate. There has long been controversy regarding the provenance of this bauxite series, including three main viewpoints: (1) derivation from the underlying Cambrian–Ordovician carbonate rocks; (2) derivation from aluminous silicate rocks in ancient uplift areas; and (3) a mixture of materials from sources (1) and (2) in varying proportions. In the Longdong area, the Taiyuan Formation is buried at depths greater than 4000 m with thickness varying from 10 m to 50 m and unconformably overlies the Cambrian-Ordovician carbonate rocks. Its lower layers are dominated by gray mudstones. Its middle layers mainly consist of gray bauxite rock series, which were covered by black mudstones, carbonaceous mudstones and coal seam. The overlying Shanxi Formation, which was deposited in terrestrial transitional facies, is in conformable contact with the Taiyuan Formation.
