The marbles of the late Permian Bozçaldağ formation, which belong to the upper levels of the Kırşehir Massif, comprise the basement lithology in the Gülkonak region. These metamorphic rocks are unconformably overlain by the Miocene–Pliocene sedimentary units and intruded by the late Cretaceous Behrekdağ granitoid. The Gülkonak Fe (Cu) skarn deposit is located in the skarn zone at the contact between the Behrekdağ granitoid and the Bozçaldağ marble. The Gülkonak iron deposit consists of two ore bodies: the Tepe pit and the Ağaçlı pit, where exploratory drilling was conducted. Following the geophysical investigations at the Tepe pit, three boreholes with total length of 156 m were drilled. The Demirören Mining Co. reports that deposit contains a reserve of 2 Mt. at 45–55 wt% Fe. Copper grade ranges from 0.1 to 0.8% accompanied by low Zn (25–150 ppm) and Pb (25–130 ppm) contents. Skarnization, carbonatization and supergene alterations are well developed in the wall rock. The Behrekdağ granitoid intrudes the marbles of Bozçaldağ formation, leading to occurrence of typical skarn-type alteration along the contact. Four major successive stages were defined for the skarn mineralization in endo- and exoskarn zones: (1) Prograde skarn; (2) Retrograde skarn; (3) Carbonate and (4) Supergene stages.
