Highrock Mine

The High Rock Mine was one of the largest phosphate mines of its day. It had to close, not for lack of ore, but because of the collapse of the market price for phosphate. It operated between 1874 and 1892, then again in the 1940s.

Phosphate occurs mainly as massive apatite in the form of veins and pockets and also disseminated in pyroxenite.

The Geological Survey of Canada described "a granite of unusual structure with fine-grained ferro magnesian minerals forming a network of curved connecting lines", which occurs in the dumps. This rock, which they called "leopard-rock", as well as fluorapatite were exhibited at the Paris International Exhibition of 1900.
