The Needles are the eroded spires of the granite core of the black Hills. They are located east of Sylvan Lake on the Needles Highway No. 87. USGS topo maps place the text "The Needles" in the terrain just south of the Needle Eye by the tunnel on the Needles Highway. Coordinates are for the Eye. The complete length of the Needles Highway is contained in a northwest extension of Custer State Park and is listed as a scenic drive.
“The Cathedral Spires and Limber Pine Natural Area, a 637-acre portion of the Needles containing six ridges of pillars as well as a disjunct stand of limber pine, was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976.” Reference, Wikipedia.
