A popular collecting locality for clear, amethyst and smoky quartz. Scepter forms are found here. Rarely, japan law twins and fluid/gas inclusions are also found.

The first 2 20-acre claims for crystal park were established originally by Emil Cheline and George Richardson in 1959. It was mainly worked by Butte Gem Club members until 1970 when it was handed over to the Beaverhead Deerlodge Forest Service. In 1993 it was deemed a fee recreation site. A 5 day per person per season limit as well as no tunneling and depth restrictions are in place. Commercial collecting is prohibited.

The top and front of the hill was bulldozed in 2023 for safety concerns and to expose new ground.
