Puy de Lemptégy is a volcano in the Puys chain, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a volcanic area in mainland France that is still potentially active (said to be dormant). It is also, by arrangement, a naturalist museum presenting in the open air the interior of a volcano excavated by careful use of non-cohesive or poorly cohesive materials, pozzolana, thus highlighting the internal architecture of supplying the eruptive mouths, namely the central volcanic vents and a system of lateral dykes. An exhibition and in season, entertainment, complete the layout. This site, due to its unique educational interest in mainland France and rare in Western Europe, is frequently visited by school groups, and used in teaching in the field by university groups.
