A small 18th century lead and copper mine. A contemporary account in the National Archives of Scotland indicates it was a project of Edinburgh architect Charles Freebairn and six others in the 1760s. They built a lead smelter on site but had difficulty separating the intimately mixed ores, so their smelting trials were unsuccessful (S. Moreton, unpublished research). There remains a weathered waste tip by the stream, a few barely visible ruins including the smelter up a small gully on the south side of the stream, and some slag. The levels and shafts are collapsed or filled up. The mine waste may have appeal to the collector of micro-specimens, but (other than massive barite) anything larger is scarce - the miners did a thorough job of breaking down the veinstone and picking out the ore.
