Iron mines located on the western side of Tromøy Island. A 500 x 500 m large area with iron skarn has been worked nmostly for masses of colophonite and calcite used as a flux in the iron ore processing.

The largest mine was Martheskjær/Marteskjerr (Holm 1824, Weibye 1848). It is about 50 m wide and started as an open pit mine, but lafter some shafts were made. The next largest located further south is Tunnelgruva.
There are 10 mines (synk in Norwegian) and 4 prospects 200 m eastwards in the area.

Simonsen (2001) has registered 22 mines and prospects in the Vågsnes area.

The mines were closed around 1850.

The socalled colophonite-layer, a 20-foot wide layer in the mine (described in Scheerer 1845), has been found to consist mostly of vesuvianite, not andradite, variety colophonite as thought (Neumann 1985).

Detailed Mineral List:

ⓘ Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
ⓘ Albite var. Oligoclase
Formula: (Na,Ca)[Al(Si,Al)Si2O8]
ⓘ Andradite ?
Formula: Ca3Fe3+2(SiO4)3
Description: Scheerer (1845) mention colophonite from this mine. Colophonite is used for a coarsely granular variety of brown, yellow-orange or reddish garnet, mostly andradite. At the mine a 20 foot wide layer of colophonite was worked for flux used in the smalting process of the iron ore. It has later been showed that this colophonite layer does not consist of andradite/ garnet as thought but in fact vesuvianite (Neumann 1985).
