Richland County is underlain by little-deformed Cambrian clastic sediments and Ordovician carbonate rocks. It contains some mineralization on the fringe of the Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-lead District, which is better known from deposits in the counties to the south. The Ordovician dolostones are frequently quarried for road material and rip rap. Cambrian sands have some value as "frac sand" and slabby flagstone. The County is in Wisconsin's "Driftless Area" so glacial influences are minor. The landscape is dominated by flat-lands, bluff or mounds generally held up by more resistant carbonates and deep glens, or coulees, especially along tributaries to the Wisconsin River, which forms the southern border of the County.
