Ajo Well # 1
The Phelps Dodge Well No. 1 was a vertical 6-foot by 8-foot shaft sunk between 1914 and 1916 to produce water for the New Cornelia Copper Company (NCCCo.), which needed water for its leaching process at Ajo (NCCCo. annual reports for the years 1914, 1915 and 1916). The parent company was the Calumet & Arizona Mining Company of Bisbee, though it was listed as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange (NCCCo. annual report, 1917).
Drill holes had been bored to look for water in the broad valley north of Ajo and fortunately hit water in 1914. A shaft was sunk in that year to a depth of 646 feet (ca. 197 m) and deepened to 700 feet (ca. 213 m) in 1915. There were several hundred feet of drifts dug to intersect water-bearing structures.
High-pressure water doors were added at the drifts to control water flow. A pumping station was installed at the 700-foot level and could produce 750 gallons (3.41 m³) of water per minute in 1915. In later years, larger pumps were installed, as the Ajo operations expanded and the town grew.
The water from this level was at 120 °F, or nearly 50 °C. Pipes transported the water between 10 and 15 miles (ca. 24 km) for use at the mine and the community.
Rock from the shaft of Well no. 1 was used for the platforms for surface facilities that held a hoist house for the shaft, storage tanks, and a substation. The rest of the removed rock was held in a normal mine dump.
The information is provided by Richard Graeme.
