An approximately 820 m by 260 m basalt deposit that cuts through the Triassic sandstone of the Palatinate Forest and is the only Tertiary basalt deposit in the Palatinate.

In the peripheral areas, the basalt is accompanied by tuffs. In the contact area, the sandstone is altered, and limestone clods (Muschelkalk) have been enclosed by the basalt.

The deposit was of no interest to mineral collectors until 1987, when small vugs with pretty natrolite and harmotome crystals were found in a few basalt blocks.

The deposit was mined in two quarries from 1841 to 1990. The northern quarry (for which the coordinates are given) was started in 1841 and continued with interruptions until 1990. Work in the southern quarry began in 1846 and ended in 1964.

The two disused quarries are located in a nature reserve and may not be entered.
