The Huntington Mine (Sec 9 T46N R29W) was first opened in 1918 as an underground mine, but was soon converted to an open pit operation, and became one of the largest in the North Cuyuna Range. It was originally worked by the Whitmarsh Mining Company but was later taken over by the Hanna Coal and Ore Mining. The ore worked was a thin-bedded portion of the Proterozoic Trommald Formation. Significant slate, possibly metamorphosed tuff and biotite-chlorite-schist were present. The complex folding made their relationships with the banded iron formation difficult to determine. The flooded pit and overgrown dumps of the mine site are now a major part of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation area. It is administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and no collecting is permitted.
