Madoc

Veins in dolomitic marble/metadolomite.

The deposit was discovered in 1909 by Donald Henderson and Chesley Pitt of Madoc. Between 1910 and 1914 it was mined from an open pit. In 1914 a shaft was sunk, but the mine remained inactive until 1943 when Reliance Fluorspar Mining Syndicate Limited took over operations until 1951. This was the mine's most productive period and four shafts (37.5, 26.5, 36.5, and 73 m deep) were sunk. Some 39,000 tonnes of ore were produced during this period, making this the leading fluorite producer in the Madoc area. Some old buildings remain on the site. There are large dumps near the shafts.

This mine is the source of the wonderful "Madoc" fluorites. Specimens are typically pale sea green optical quality fluorite crystals of cubic habit with minor octahedral faces. Many were recovered on a white to tan fine-grained baryte matrix. The Town of Madoc is nearby. Many specimens were recovered during surface excavations in the early to mid-1970s. All mines in the area have since been recovered and are now inaccessible.

In 2001 Rod Tyson (and his wife Helen and helpers Ian Nicklin and John Gorham) got the required permits to work three above ground occurrences on the Rogers Mine property which produced many fine fluorite specimens. These occurrences are not far from the Rogers Mine. They are now (2023) added as sub-localities to the Rogers Mine locality under "Fluorite occurrence 1" aka "the garbage pit"; "Fluorite occurrence 2" aka "the potato pit" and "Fluorite occurrence 3" aka "the snake pit". George Robinson and Frank Melanson collected at these occurrences in the mid-1970’s. Bob Beckett also collected at them in the mid-1980’s.

The occurrences, like the mine itself, are on private property.
