Blauquarz-Fundstelle (Blauquarzfundstelle), Sankt Koloman, Bezirk Hallein, Salzburg, Österreich
Occurrence of blue quartz (also known as sapphire quartz), owing its colour to microscopic inclusions of magnesioriebeckite. The crystals, which are often associated to flawless rock crystals, occur in veinlets disseminated in a layer of carbonate-silicate boulders formed by hydrothermal alteration of underlying Werfen slates. Part of the mineralization is genetically related to neighbouring melaphyr-diabases, providing the sodium needed for the formation of the alkali amphiboles.
Conditions of formation are suggested to comprise pressures of < 1 kbar and temperatures of < 250°C (Hasenberger et al., 1998).
This locality has been known since the late 18th century. Located in the upper Grabenbach valley, about 5 km NE of Golling.
Note: Coordinates are from Mineralienatlas.de and are approximate.
Note: The locality name "Lienbach" (Fugger, 1905) is erroneous, as shown by Schauberger (1959).
