The Strait of Rodez is an ancient geological landscape that was formed at Rodez during the Permian and Jurassic between the Rougier de Marcillac in the north, the Ségala plateau, the Lévezou massif and the Vibal massif. It was during this period when the Strait of Rodez was submerged that the limestone sediments which form the “Petits Causses” rouergats (Causse Comtal and Causse de Sévérac) and the underlying detrital sediments which form the rougiers de Marcillac were deposited.

Following the formation of the Hercynian range, the region underwent numerous geological fractures which cause the formation of a collapsed ditch between the current Aubrac and the Lévezou-Ségala complex. In this depression, rich swamps developed during the Carboniferous period, which formed the coal deposits of the Bertholene region. Then it fills with detrital sediment during the Permian. Some are enriched in uranium which will also be mined in the Bertholene region. Following the rising waters during the Jurassic, the strait became a tropical arm of the sea, connected to the Straits of the Grands Causses. It is during this period that the thick layers of limestone sediments that characterize the causses are deposited.
