Ancient lead, zinc, silver and baryte mining area. Deposit in Palaeozoic carbonates with strongly deformed ores.
Located approx. 3 km SSW of Frohnleiten.

It is quite likely that the Celts (300 B.C.) were the first to mine for silver in this area.
The “newer” mines were worked with interruptions from the 16th century until 1927.
Records go back to 1746 when Heinrich Leopold Heipl owned the mine. In 1871 Ludwig Kuschel owned the mine, then consisting of 8 adits plus some open pits. Later it was owned by the Gewerkschaft St. Christoph and the operation was shut down In 1927. In the 1950s and 1970s some exploration work was done, but the results were not good enough to start the workings again.
Production for Arzwaldgraben and Rabenstein together in 1775 was about 220 metric tons of ore with 70 t of lead, 60 kg of silver and 93 t of galena. The production reached its peak during WWI with about 1’500 t of ore per year. In total these 2 mines produced approx. 15’000 t of lead, 1’500 t of zinc, 20 t of silver and a very small amount of baryte.

The mine consisted of about 10 adits with crosscuts, one shaft and several open pits, most of them are now caved in and overgrown. Still known are the Unterer Maierhoferstollen, the Oberer Maierhoferstollen, the Wetterstollen, the Neuer Kreuzstollen, the Dreierstollen (partly accessible in 2002), the Weiglstollen, the Ramystollen, the Ramyschacht, the Mariahilfstollen and the Murstollen (about 1600 m long).

The mill built in 1892 was located near to the Murstollen. The smelting was done in Deutschfeistritz.

The minerals are found in the mine dumps, but many of the dumps are now overgrown or have been covered by road works.

Mine dumps and adits are located at:
