Granatenkogel Nordflanke (Granatenkopf Nordflanke; Granatkogel Nordflanke; Granatenwand), Gaisbergtal, Obergurgl, Gurgler Tal, Ötztal, Nordtirol, Tirol, Österreich

Classic location for garnets (almandine), but on the Granatenkogel south slope (in Italy) you will have better chances to find nice specimens.

Located 4.7 km SE of Obergurgl, with the centre of the area at approx. N46.83389 E11.06304, at an elevation of 2650 m.

Garnets have also been found around N 46.83734 E11.06249 and around N 46.83449 E11.04512.

Records for this location date from the early 19th century, but it is highly likely that it has been known much longer for its “Oezthaler Granaten”, possibly since 5,000 years (see Berichte der Deutschen Mineralogischen Gesellschaft: Vom Amulett der Ötztaler Gletscherleiche, 1994).

In the 19th century, a small amount of garnets was shipped to Bohemia. However, the quality was not as good (too soft for grinding) as the one from the garnet gorge (Laufenberger Granat) in Carinthia and the work was soon stopped again.

Before 1918 the literature did not really distinguish between the N- and the S-slope, because both (naturally) belonged to Austria. Only after the annexation of this part of Tyrol by Italy was it described separately.

If you are around, pay a visit to David Gufler, better known as the "Granaten-Yeti".
