Locality situated a few hundred metres from the diabase outcrop of Costa di Bargone [see http://www.mindat.org/loc-268631.html].
A spectacular outcrop of pillow lavas, which pertains to the overturned flank of an anticline (the Mt. Porcile anticline), is visible along the road. The pillows are aphyric and show a typical texture variation from core to rim (intersertal, spherulitic, variolitic, and glassy). Some pillows contain flying saucer-like cavities (about 2-5 cm thick), often filled with carbonates, quartz or silicates. The sedimentary origin of some of these carbonates has been determined due to the presence of calcareous nannofossils (Abbate et al., 1986).
A mass of porphyric diabase associated with gabbroic rocks is exposed in the proximity of the pillow lava outcrop. The mass is cut by various systems of fractures, cemented by segregation minerals. Typical mineral assemblages include albite, pumpellyite, prehnite, chlorite, sericite, and subordinate actinolite. Calcite, quartz, prehnite, and epidote are abundant in the larger veins. Furthermore, veinlets of fine-grained diabase (containing albite, chlorite, pumpellyite, epidote, and titanite) crosscut the porphyric diabase.
