Harris Quarry

Small soapstone quarry famous for its huge muscovite after cordierite pseudomorphs. Groups of crystals over 30 x 30 cm have been collected. Individual well-formed doubly terminated crystals to 20 x 10 x 10 cm. During the heyday of collecting, specimen size was dictated by how large a specimen could be extracted. Exceptional examples were found by Dr. Warren Johanssen, and Charles Palache found many excellent specimens in the 1940's, as have collectors subsequently and the locality is still viable, although work now would be needed to clear the area. Specimens are difficult to obtain today and development work would be required to be successful.

In 1878, Richmond's soapstone was described as "impure... the mineral contains anthophyllite and pyrites, which interfere with the sawing of it into blocks". The land once belonged to a Lorenzo Harris, hence the common location name.
