Disseminated gold mineralization within a sequence of altered phyllitic metapelite to meta-siltstone, associated with sheeted quartz vein sets and 3-5% disseminated sulphide mineralization. Thus far, resources of 25.9 million tonnes at 1.3 grams/tonne (1.1 million ounces of gold) and inferred resources of 117.0 million tonnes at 1.2 grams/tonne (4.4 million ounces of gold) have been outlined.

The deposit occured in the Proterozoic metamorphic rocks (Gaixian Formation). Magma thermal events included Wolongquan monzonitic granite in the northwest and Maoling monzonitic granite in the south, as well as a small number of dikes (diorite and diorite porphyry, among others). Orebodies are primarily veinlet disseminated orebodies composed of four ore belts. Industrial orebodies are in No. I and II mineralized belts, while only gold mineralization is found in No. III and IV mineralized belts. No. I mineralized belt is the main mineralized zone of the Maoling gold deposit, with a large scale and number of industrial ore bodies and concentrated distribution. The north is wide, while the south is narrow, and the length of the four mineralized zones is 1500 m, the exposed width is 80–470 m, and the extension is 300–500 m.

The exposed strata in the Maoling gold orefield is the Gaixian Formation of the Paleoproterozoic Liaohe Group, which is mainly composed of phyllite, leptynite, and schist. The gold mineralization typically occurs in the phyllite and schist of the Gaixian Formation in this area. Four belts of mineralization occur within the altered phyllite of the Gaixian Formation have been identified. The No. I belt is the main ore belt that consists of 33 orebodies with a grade range from 3.10 to 11.65 g/t. The ore belt is about 1500 m long and 430 m wide, and NE-trending (15°), general W-dipping at 50°–70°. The No. IV belt with an average grade of 1.54 g/t is about 2000 m long and 100 m wide, and NNE-trending, general W-dipping at 60°–70°. Gold ores at the Maoling gold deposit include quartz veins- characterized by bending stockwork veins, flat stockwork veins, and altered rock types. Four hydrothermal stages were identified in the Maoling gold deposit: (I) a quartz-arsenopyrite ± pyrite stage (stage I); (II) a quartz-gold- arsenopyrite-pyrrhotite sulfide stage (stage II); (III) a quartz-gold-polymetallic sulfide stage (stage III); and (IV) a quartz-calcite stage (stage IV).
