Pondorff Mine

A pegmatite mine about 20 miles SE of Butte on the east side of the continental divide.

The history of the Pohndorf amethyst pegmatite dates back to the late 1800s. It was initially under claim and worked by local August Pohndorf, who worked the mine for specimens. After his death in 1938, prospectors Edwin Over and Arthur Montgomery filed claim on the site and worked it for roughly three decades. The land was sold and reclaimed, and now lies on private property.

Specimens are commonly labeled as Pohndorf while seemingly being from other nearby pegmatites. A general consensus is specimens lacking schorl tourmaline are of questionable origin.

Several examples of early (pre-1938) specimens with mislabeled locales have been noted. Locales such as "Big Timber" or "Billings County" have been observed.
