El Mutún mine; El Cerro Mutún
The world's largest iron ore deposit, known since 1848, but not yet worked on a significant scale because of its remoteness from industrial centers.
El Mutún (Serrania Mutún) is a range of hills (covering an area of 75 km2) up to 845 m elevation, rising 600 m out of a swampy plain, composed of silica-rich Fe oxides, a typical banded iron formation (BIF). The deposit extends across the border into Brazil, where it is called the Serrania de Jacadigo.
Estimated reserves are about 40.205 billion tons of iron ore of 50% iron, mainly in the form hematite and magnetite.
