Historic copper mine discovered in 1610.
Old labels may use the obsolete locality name "Shimotsuke province".
Historical summary:
1610: Two farmers found copper vein in Bizen-tateyama.
1676: It was recorded 1300 to 1500 tons of copper ore were yielded per year.
1817: Temporary halt because of reduction in output.
1872: Owner changed from Tochigi Pref. to individual mine owner.
1877: After several times of owner change, Ichibei Furukawa (founder of Furukawa group) owned the mine.
1880: Eiichi Shibusawa, president of 1st national bank (Now, Mizuho bank), participated in the management of the mine.
From this period, water pollution was actualized due to increase of production.
1935: New dressing plant for collection from low quality ore.
1948: Full mechanization of beneficiation.
In spite of improvement of the efficiency of the beneficiation by state of the art technology, the production is gradually reduced...
1973: Closed.
