Granite aggregate Quarry. Quarrying first started here in 1868 and continued under the Cliffe Hill Granite Co.Ltd until 1959, when it was acquired by the then Tarmac Quarry Products Ltd. Quarrying and processing continued over the next 25 years. In 1983, Tarmac secured permission for what was to be one of the last 'Greenfield' Quarrying operations in the UK -New Cliffe Hill- as an integral part of that permission, it was intended that operations to recover the reserves from 'Old' Cliffe Hill would continue in the future, (the quarry meanwhile, has not been worked for the best part of 15- 20 years). In 2005 Midland Quarry Products will recommence extraction in Old Cliffe Hill Quarry, with aggregate being conveyed via the new 'Joskin' Tunnel to the New Cliffe Hill processing plant, asphalt plants and rail-head. An estimated 60 million tonnes of reserves remain to be excavated from Old Cliffe Hill.
