Small mine consisting of a level and a shaft on minor WNW orientated group of veins which form the mineralised knoll of Elbolton Hill. Note: the muddy roof of the rise that yielded the best fluorite crystals is very unstable.
[Dunham: The Geology of the Northern Pennine Orefield, Vol II Stainmore to Craven, pp 226]
At Elbolton Mine, the Elbolton Level driven from the Thorpe end of the hill was still being worked in 1894, but that level closed around 1908. The Escoe Level (Escoe House Level), driven from the northern side of the hill near to Escoe House, is not shown on maps until after 1894. That level is presumed to have been driven by Mr Mason of Gargrave who worked the mines up to their closure. The extremely narrow veins in the mine produced lead ore from wing deposits and small flats. The underground workings are in a poor condition nowadays, but in recent years they have on occasion yielded specimens of colourless fluorite with a deep indigo-blue surface layer.
