Silicic ash beds near Chimney Rock.

Chimney Rock is an eroded outlier composed of brule clay including layers of volcanic ash and Arikaree sandstone. The age of the sediments represent a span of time from about 34 million to 23 million years ago. Frontiersmen, fur trapers, settlers, prospectors and miners traveling the Oregon Trail were fascinated by this unique geological formation. Starting about 1844 Chimney Rock was described in many journals written by people crossing the continent in wagon trains. The trails followed the North Platte River and the landmark could be seen from about 30 miles away.
