Emerald occurs in a biotite-phlogopite schist zone in amphibolites. It has been opened up in a small bulldozer cut to about 5m deep, about 500m N of the main road. The emeralds are a pale to deep green and occur in crystals to about 2.5cm long, mostly highly fractured, with some small gemmy areas.
Beryl/emeralds were discovered here in 1987. The mineralisation occupies two shear zones, which lie sub-parallel to the trend of the enclosing greenstone belt. A shallow open-cut was developed around 1992, and a small parcel sent to South Africa for evaluation. They were found to have a well developed crystal symmetry, but the amount of material at the deposit did not warrant mining.
